The Foodies Top Food Markets Around The World

food markets

When traveling, I am all for visiting the local markets. It’s a very fulfilling experience and a great way to submerge oneself in the local culture and eat delicious fresh food.

The infographic below looks at a handful of major cities from Canada to Spain, and their most popular or renowned traditional food markets as places of interest, offering helpful facts about how many stalls to expect as well as the opening days and times.

These markets are ideal for foodies and travelers alike.Β

These markets are great for expats too. If you ever move to a new country, exploring the local farmer’s market is a great way to get to know the flavors, the local people and start building your own flavors.

I would add the mercado de Jamaica in Mexico City to the list. Would you add any other markets to this list?

  1. Great infographic! For Singapore, I’d add the Newton Circus outdoor food market, which is more like an open-air food court I guess.

I’ve been to dozens of great markets throughout Mexico, but never Mercado de Jamaica….In general, I love the variety of cheap eats, Sunday breakfasts in particular.

One more thing: El Mercado Central in San Salvador will Blow. Your. Mind.

    Yes.

  2. Great suggestions but I actually went to La Boqueria but didn’t find anything particularly good and it was quite pricey 😦 I think el Mercado de Jamaica looked way for impressive than that one!

  3. This was so fun to read! I’ve only every been to Borough Market in London and I’m seriously obsessed with that place. Can’t wait to one day go to these other ones πŸ™‚

  4. What a great resource! I used to live 1 block away from St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, and I can vouch the quality of food on offer there. There’s so much variety and it’s great fun to wander around and sample different things. I’d also recommend picking up a few different flavoured mustards from Kozlik’s stand in there. πŸ™‚

  5. Mani, have you been to Kensington Market in Toronto? It’s one of our ABSOLUTE favourite places to go..there’s a Mexican bakery (fresh churros, yum!) and a Mexican restaurant that’s tradition for us to eat there once in a while. I’ll take pics and do a post about it.

      1. You’d love it! It’s just been too cold to go and take pics. Now that it’s warming up it’ll be much easier to spend a lot of time taking nice pics.
That could be a business venture for you, opening up a small Mexican restaurant or food truck??
Taco came up with the idea of doing elotes and esquites here…I think it’s a really good idea…who knows…we always dream πŸ™‚
