Exciting Things To See And Do In Morocco

Thinking about a holiday in Morocco? The country has long been a popular place for tourists – and for obvious reasons. There’s lots to see and do in the North African wonderland from the plains of the Sahara to the cool tides of the coast to the urban buzz of the bazaar. There’s practically an experience here for everyone. Here are some of my personal recommendations of top activities to squeeze into your trip…

See the Sights in Casablanca

Those who’ve seen the classic Humphrey Bogart film Casablanca will probably want to pop in the famous Rick’s Café and have a brew. Indeed, it’s worth seeing, but there are many other wonders to the sprawling city. There’s the impressive King’s Palace, containing an excess of guards outside its entrance. And then there’s the city’s most prominent landmark – the colossal Hassan II Mosque sporting the world’s tallest minaret.

From here, sightseers can take a short walk to the beach front, home to many restaurants and a number of public pools. Also, if you’re daring enough, you can dip your toes in the sea (depending on the time of year it can be freezing!)

Go Shopping in a Medina

All of Morocco’s major cities have an area they call the ‘medina’ – a district of narrow, maze-like streets. The ancient city of Marrakesh is known for having one of the oldest and most extensive in the country. Here tourists can find colourful food markets and traditional stalls of every kind, selling local products and handmade goods such as carpets, tagines and pottery.

Road vehicles such as cars and motorbikes are generally not allowed to travel in these areas, although you may find the odd mule and cart. Many coffee bars, historical building and mosques can also be found in these areas. For anyone wanting to soak up the full Moroccan experience – the medina is the place to find it.

Tour the Sahara on Camelback

If the idea of crowded streets and lots of people doesn’t take your fancy, you can always escape into the great expanse of the Sahara desert. Various tours can be arranged via camelback that will take you out into the dunes, even giving you the chance to meet nomadic tribes. Local guides will be able to take you on the best routes so that you can take in the magical surroundings without having to worry about getting lost.

Buggies and quadbikes are also available as an alternative option for those who don’t trust camels.

Stay in a Villa

There are a number of villas for sale in Marrakesh for those who want to deviate from the usual hotel experience. This allows you to enjoy an intimate stay, while being able to go out during the day and explore.

Lounge on Legzira Beach

One of Morocco’s greatest beaches, Legzira is great for anyone who wants to catch some sun. The tide can be unpredictable so swimming isn’t advised. Giant rock formations meanwhile give the beach it’s own unique surroundings. Go during the week to avoid the crowds!
